UID Laser Marking & Engraving Systems

Laser Photonics is capable of automating most of its systems to suit any factory and application. UID marks or DPM (Direct Part Marking) can be made with our lasers on plastics, nickel, aluminum, titanium, and most steel for the automotive, defense, medical, aerospace, and electronics industries.

Managing inventory and tracking products is a problem that has sought various solutions. The Department of Defense (DoD) has found the solution to fix each problem and lower cost structure. The MIL-STD 130 requires that all government deliverables must be marked with a machine-readable 2D data matrix code. This code is also known as the unique identification mark, or UID. With UID becoming more popular in the commercial industry and mandatory in the defense industry, Laser Photonics has developed the capabilities to provide the complete software and product package.

Laser Marking Action Shot

Finding a company that meets all the MIL-STD 130 requirements from the 2D software generation to the proper verifiable mark, and finally, the Wide Area Workflow registration process, can be somewhat challenging. Laser Photonics has sold this very solution to companies in the past and has continuously worked to improve their methods.

Creating a UID mark does not always have to be done with a laser. It can be done with an inkjet, chemical etch, or a dot peen method each with its own advantages and disadvantages. For example, using an ink jet for UID marking offers a low entry cost but it is a low-quality non-permanent mark. Using a laser system may have a higher entry cost, but it is the most versatile of the methods applicable to replacing print labels for direct part marks (DPM). Laser systems also offer the highest quality permanent mark available and require virtually no maintenance with at least 50,000 hours of life expectancy.
