Insulation works by slowing the movement of heat from a hot space to one that is cooler. It’s important to realize that insulation does not block the movement of heat, it simply slows it down.  This resistance to heat flow or movement is commonly referred to as R-value. The best insulations are the ones that have the highest R-value per inch of thickness. But always compare prices of R-value per square foot.

A customer submitted samples of fiberglass foam insulation to our application engineers looking for means to cut the samples using a laser system. Our engineers processed the fiberglass foam insulation samples using the 250 Watt SMB 1200 FL cutting system.

The nature of this application requires that a custom system be used to properly process this sample. Since a standard SBM 1200 system was used the results were not optimum, with a longer focal length lens around 30" or higher and laser output of at least 500 watts the results should change significantly.

Currently a 3.75" lens and a 200 watt laser were used to process this application at 50mm per second. The results of the short focal length lens is very evident in the samples it is clearly visible that the bottom half of the cut is considerably darker, this was due to the beam being drastically de-focused in addition to using 6 passes due to the lower powered laser. With the optimum set-up the burnt edges, along with the number of passes needed will be dramatically reduced.
