Q-Switched Fiber Lasers are ideal for marking on stainless steel and other metals. No laser marking material (LMM, such as Thermark or Cermark) is needed. Stainless steel parts are marked using the process of surface etching. This is to create an etch mark by vaporizing the surface of the material at very high speeds, providing very minimal damage to the part. This is usually done when a quick mark is needed and cycle time is an issue. A surface etch gives a high contrasting mark and is ideal for marking on coatings without penetrating through, such as Chrome, Nickel, etc.
Carbide steel, often found in the tooling industry, is a very common cutting material used with drill bits, saw blades, lathe bits, router bits and other tools.
Our fiber laser material processing systems have shown incredible aptitude and reliability in the tooling industry. A process similar to surface etching stainless steel is used to lightly etch carbide steel, which leaves an excellent, high-contrast mark on this material.
Laser marking of hardened tools requires highly visible contrasting marks that can withstand sand blasting and other industrial processes. Hardened tools can be easily engraved, vaporizing the material to produce a specific depth using multiple laser passes. This leaves an excellent contrast on most metal tools.
